Colony Park History
In the 1960s, the growth of Austin’s east side was driven by the arrival of large companies and the impact of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968. Additionally, the trend in real estate shifted to constructing multiple houses in groups, moving away from the traditional single-home per lot approach. The challenges Black people faced in purchasing homes west of I-35 also made the east side a more appealing option for relocation.
Colony Park became part of Austin in 1972, primarily serving families stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base, a significant military installation near the city. The area also attracted other families looking to establish their lives in a peaceful setting with new, affordable homes.
Despite being overlooked for several years, Colony Park is now receiving renewed attention. The Colony Park Neighborhood Association, along with various community organizations, is actively working to rejuvenate the area. Their goal is to transform Colony Park into a thriving community where residents can enjoy their lives, age comfortably, and create a welcoming environment for future generations.
